A client recently brought Picture Worth Custom Framing an oversized, vintage 48-star American flag that needed a presentation worthy of what it represents. This wasn’t a project where simply finding a large enough frame would do.
The flag’s age, size and character required a custom solution designed around the textile itself.

Why a 48-Star American Flag Is Different
The American flag carried 48 stars from 1912 until 1959, representing the United States before Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union.
That makes surviving 48-star flags tangible pieces of American history.
However, framing an oversized historic textile presents very different challenges from framing a photograph or print. The fabric must be properly supported, the presentation must account for its size and weight, and the framing design should complement the object without overwhelming it.
For this project, PWCF created an oversized presentation that allows the flag’s age, wrinkles, discoloration and other evidence of its history to remain visible rather than making an old flag look artificially new.
The Frame Became Part of the Story
Look closely at the finished piece.
The dark custom frame provides strong contrast against the red, white and blue textile. More importantly, the repeating gold star detail around the perimeter creates a subtle visual connection to the stars within the flag itself.
It’s a small design decision that changes the entire presentation.
Rather than simply putting a frame around an object, our goal is to create a finished piece in which the frame, object and story belong together.
